Years into her struggles with weight gain Cathy (not her real name) finally threw her hands in the air and declared surrender. What followed was the devastation of her health, both mental and physical. As her weight went up her self esteem plummeted and deep depression settled over her every thought. One by one she stopped seeing her friends, stopped going out in public and eventually stopped even talking with those who were once close in her life. When she stopped attending family functions, her relatives finally began to voice their concerns.
It took her brothers loving concern to convince her to begin seeing a doctor and addressing her problem head on instead of hiding from it. For the next three years with her family fully supporting her, Cathy embarked on a series of diet and life changes in the effort to reduce her weight, now complicated by hypertension. At the end of three years, with her weight losses minimal at best, Cathy began to consider Bariatric Surgery.
Her Mom was the one who came across an article written in the La Jolla Light newspaper about a medical convention that had taken place in La Jolla, California. According to the article many surgeries cost as much as 10 times more when done in the US than the same surgeries in other countries and just as safe. Cathy’s family began to research the possibilities of Medical Tourism and discovered that newer facilities were being built in places like Tijuana, Cancun and Monterrey and elsewhere in Mexico specifically to cater to Americans seeking the types of surgery Cathy was now considering. What Cathy found interested was that some of the Doctors in Tijuana, Cancun and Monterrey were doing twice as many surgeries per month than some of the most renowned doctors in the United State.
Cathy’s brother and mother took a first visitation trip, to a facility in Tijuana where they were pleased to discover clean, well run state of the art operating rooms, first rate trained medical professionals and a cost of 50% – 75% less than the same procedures done in the United States. With the loving support of her family and the agreement of her doctor, Cathy is now preparing and saving for her Medical Vacation.
