“How does someone let themselves go like that?” Those words came back to haunt me as I sat in my doctors waiting room. The young girl who had whispered, too loudly, to her friend was skinny as a line drawn stick figure – both of them were. Upon her overly loud whisper, I realized everyone in that room was now staring rudely at me, causing me to squirm in extreme discomfort at their scrutiny. I could try to hide, but at 392 pounds, I’d need a whole lot more than the magazine adorned with more stick figure girls I was holding in my pudgy fingers. Pudgy? Who was I kidding!?! These were the fingers of an enormous person of obese proportions, but how had they become mine? Just yesterday, I know I was actually one of the stick figure people I now avoided as if they carried the plague. The saddest thing is that I needn’t have tried so hard, because they were avoiding me like I was the plague carrying one. When did I go from asking that question to being the person who inspired that question to be asked by others?
The causes of obesity are wide ranging and not always easily traced to one single event or situation. Most times a combination of occurrences result in this disorder manifesting itself, and often it creeps on so slowly it really does get missed by the person it is happening to! It’s like you get ready for sleep one evening and everything is just fine, and you wake up in the morning to this giant you are completely unfamiliar with. How does one someone ‘let themselves go’ like that? Usually, they haven’t let go at all, but they may have lost the will to be concerned for any variety of reasons.
